Community Owner, Kalispell Moms for Moms

MelissaUtleyKalispell Moms for Moms helped me find the connections and support I was looking for after having my daughter.  I want to share this gift with others.

My husband and I are originally from Salt Lake City, UT. In late 2007 my husband accepted a job offer in the Flathead Valley. I stayed behind for a few months to finish graduate school and moved in July 2008 to Whitefish. We now reside in Kalispell, MT. Our daughter, Samantha, joined our family in March 2014.

Shortly after Samantha’s arrival I made the difficult decision to leave a job I loved to stay home with her.  I quickly realized how challenging and isolating motherhood can be, especially since my family lived out of state and I had little support nearby.  I needed to connect with other moms and began looking for things to do and places to go to meet other moms.  I heard about Kalispell Moms for Moms on a Facebook post and immediately joined the community.  Through Kalispell Moms for Moms I found the connection I was looking for.

“With support I realized what I was feeling was shared by many new moms. I became determined to help and nurture moms. Becoming the owner of Missoula Moms for Moms is the perfect opportunity for me to make a difference.”

When I became pregnant with my daughter, Mira, she became the center of my world. I wanted to protect her, provide for her, and give her everything. I knew parenting was going to be challenging, but I wasn’t prepared for the emotions that followed Mira’s birth. When I got home from the hospital, I felt overwhelmed, anxious, isolated, and trapped. I would cry every day for days, and every day I would feel guilty for not being the happy new mom that I had envisioned. My incredibly supportive husband didn’t know what to do for me, and I didn’t know what to ask for to make things better. Eventually, I reached out to a high school friend who was also a new mother. She had a similar experience, and was encouraging, supportive and made me feel less alone. It was with her support that I realized what I was feeling was shared by many new moms. It was through that experience that I became determined to help and nurture new moms. Becoming the owner of Missoula Moms for Moms Comm

Unity is the perfect opportunity for me to make a difference. I want to help be part of a support network for moms in this beautiful town we all call home. No matter where you are in your motherhood journey, I never want you to feel alone, because you are not. You have the whole community of Missoula mamas here to back you.

Owner of Whitefish Moms for Moms™

“It’s important for all parents to have access to information and advice that is local, family friendly and free of charge!  In this generation of internet savvy moms on the go, our hyper-local social network model is the best way for moms to connect and build community.”

My husband, David, and I have three children – Simon, Madeleine, and Anna. We moved to my husband’s hometown of Whitefish from Carbondale last summer, so being a part of Moms for Moms has been a great way for me to make connections in our new community.  A former public/private school teacher, I now teach Spanish classes at our local community college and am the Youth Minister at our local parish.  Starting the Moms for Moms site has been great because I can work it into/around my already busy schedule and still be around for my kids when they need me.  It has been so much fun to watch it grow and to feel like I am making a positive difference in the lives of other mothers.

Favorite family activities include hiking, backpacking (in my dream life), cross country skiing, canoeing and reading/playing games with the kids!  We love having adventures as a family exploring this amazing part of the country – searching for moose and bear tracks in mud and snow and exploring Glacier National Park.  Can’t get enough of the lakes, trees and wildlife.  Every day is a new adventure – both online and off!
